Get Outside!

When the weather gets wicked, we may want to hibernate at home, but how long will it be before cabin fever sets in? This year, keep your family busy with these fun outdoor activities!

Take a walk in a winter wonderland. Dress in layers to keep out the cold, then head out the door just as twilight settles in. Is there anything so beautiful as a neighbourhood laced with twinkling lights?

Sleighs aren’t only for Santa! Just outside almost every Canadian city there are farms and parks that offer horse-drawn sleigh rides in wintertime. Take a heavy blanket and a flask of hot chocolate for a ride on the winter trails.

Let’s all go to the zoo! Most zoos are open year-round. See the polar bears and penguins in their preferred climate!

Go cross-country. Cross-country skiing is great exercise that you can do almost anywhere in winter. Take the skis to any field or park with a flat terrain and get your heart pumping!

Take a spin round the rink. Ice skating is a favourite winter activity. Locate an outdoor rink and put your family on ice for the afternoon.

Park it! No, not on the couch… take a walk to your local park. If there’s a hill, pull the toboggan along. If there’s plenty of snow on the ground, have everyone pitch in and make a snow family. Remember to bring the camera for a frozen family portrait!

Step back in time… and try snowshoeing just like the first Canadian settlers did. It’s harder than it looks and it’s great exercise.

Take in the attractions. Go sightseeing in your own city. Visit outdoor exhibits, winter fairs and other tourist attractions. If you’re the indoor type, this is the perfect season to see what’s new at the museum and local art galleries.

Volunteer in your neighbourhood. As a family, offer to shovel sidewalks and driveways for elderly neighbours. You’ll be a great help to them and it’s good exercise too!
